FAQs for New RISE Members
Q. What is RISE Learning for Life?
A. RISE is a grass-roots organization offering 300+ non-credit enrichment classes to encourage lifelong learning at Rio Salado College Lifelong Learning Center in Surprise. The building itself is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. RISE has separate office hours which are listed below.
We meet at a Rio Salado Community College Campus, but are a separate organization. Most of the staff you will meet work directly for Rio Salado, and not for RISE. We encourage you to work as often as possible with our RISE staff, the Coordinator and Assistant Coordinator. (Please remember that RISE staff is part time and sometimes you may need to leave a phone message – your call will be returned as soon as possible.) Q. Who can join RISE?
A. Any person 18+ who lives in Maricopa County.
Q. How much do classes cost?
A. A $65.00 membership which runs from July 1 – June 30 entitles you to take an unlimited number of classes. Take as many classes as you want! RISE adheres to the Rio Salado no refund policy.
Q. What does RISE offer?
A. RISE offers over 300+ non-credit enrichment classes a year to members in the areas of social sciences, natural sciences, health and wellness, spirituality and religion, the arts, finance, and life styles. Book clubs and free events for the public are also presented. In addition, RISE sponsors social events such as those honoring new members and volunteer teachers. Class ideas are sometimes determined by the desires and interests of the membership.
Q. When are classes offered?
A. Most classes run from Mon-Thurs from 10 a.m. – 11:55 a.m. and 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. but there are some exceptions. Please read the catalog carefully.
Semesters run from October – December (Fall); January – February (Winter); March – April (Spring), June - July (Summer) with movies in July and August. The catalog for each semester will be mailed directly to your home about a month prior to the start of the upcoming semester.
Q. How do I sign up for a class?
A. You can use our website, riselearning.org – simply sign on using your user name (your first and last name in small letters with no punctuation and your password which is password) and click away! There are detailed directions in your New Member Packet. If you prefer to use paper registration, there is one in the back of your catalog. There is also a drop/add form in your catalog if you decide to withdraw or add a class. All forms you might need during any particular semester are included in your catalog. Please take a moment and page through it.
Q. How do I know where to go for my class?
A. The lobby marquee shows the RISE classes in orange, class name on the left, room number on the right. When you arrive at the classroom, you’ll find a roster. Please check in by placing a checkmark after your name. Should you not find your name on the roster, please add it to the last page and put a check mark after your name. Thanks!
Q. What if I signed up for a class and can’t make it?
A. We do ask that you try to call the RISE Assistant (480.377.4296) or RISE Coordinator (480.377.4262) so that they can give your seat to someone else who might want to attend that class.
Q. What’s a Community Event?
A. A community event is a class that we have opened up to community members who do not belong to RISE. We encourage community participation in such events as West Valley Symphony, Wayne Stutzer presentations, and Arizona Broadway Theatre events. As a RISE member you can pre-register for these events as you would for any other RISE class, but feel free to bring a friend or a neighbor as well!
Q. Who teaches the classes?
A. Presenters who have expertise and interest in diverse topics are drawn from the membership as well as from surrounding educational, medical, cultural, business communities and public officials. All of our presenters are volunteers and are not paid any type of salary to teach here at RISE.
Q. Are there special rules and regulations when we use the classrooms?
A. Yes. Since we are on a Maricopa County Community College Campus, we do ask that you refrain from political and incendiary speech and/or campaigning. We also ask that you eat and drink in the lounges – no food and drink in the classrooms, please!
Q. Do I get anything else besides this New Member packet?
A. Yes, a RISE name tag! Please stop by the front desk about a week after you join and pick up your personalized name tag. Your name and membership number appear on this name tag.
Q. How many people belong to RISE?
A. We currently have over 1100 members in the RISE family.
RISE is closed for the month of AUGUST. Please make a note of that.
